What to Bring on Your Solo Date Instead of a Phone
When you’re spending time alone, it can be so tempting to spend most of that time on your phone. I’ve struggled with this, especially when taking myself on solo dates away from home. Here are some alternative items I like to bring with me to disconnect from technology.
1. A Good Book
A book is a classic companion for a solo outing. Whether you’re lost in fiction or absorbing nonfiction, reading allows you to immerse yourself in another world. It’s also the perfect activity to slow down and enjoy your surroundings, making it an ideal choice for a café or park visit.
2. A Journal
Journaling turns your solo date into an introspective experience, helping you slow down and connect with your thoughts. You can reflect on your day, set goals, or simply observe and describe your surroundings. Journals also offer a creative outlet—whether for freeform writing, a gratitude list, or doodles.
3. Sketchpad and Pencils
Sketching, even if you’re not an artist, allows you to focus on the details of your environment. Drawing people, buildings, or nature helps you stay present. The act of creating, no matter the result, can be a meditative way to pass time and is a great replacement for phone time.
4. A Disposable Camera
Carrying a disposable camera is a fun and creative way to document your experience. It also adds a fun element of surprise, as you won’t see the photos until they’re developed. I like to take pictures on my camera so that I can later add them to my solo dating journal. I must admit though, sometimes I do bring my digital camera instead as I love being able to post my picture online, something that you can’t really do with a disposable camera.
5. Puzzle or Brain Teasers
For a mental challenge, bring a puzzle or brain teaser like a crossword or Sudoku. These keep your mind sharp and offer a satisfying way to relax while enjoying your surroundings. You’ll engage your brain and finish the day with a sense of accomplishment.
6. Cards or Small Board Games for One
Solo card games like Solitaire or small board games designed for one are great for passing time. They’re compact and portable, and provide fun, mental stimulation, and a small sense of challenge.
